Income-Based Repayment Plan (IBR)

Additional Information

Income-Based Repayment Plan (IBR)

The Income-Based Repayment (IBR) Plan is one of the federal student loan repayment options that may be available to eligible borrowers who meet specific program requirements established by the U.S. Department of Education.

Eligibility and repayment terms may depend on factors such as loan type, outstanding loan balance, income information, family size, repayment history, and other requirements applicable at the time of application.

Potentially eligible loan types may include certain federal student loans, such as:

  • Direct Subsidized Loans
  • Direct Unsubsidized Loans
  • Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans
  • PLUS Loans made to eligible borrowers (excluding certain Parent PLUS circumstances)
  • Direct Consolidation Loans or FFEL Consolidation Loans that meet applicable requirements and do not include certain Parent PLUS Loans

Under IBR, monthly payment amounts may be calculated based on a percentage of discretionary income according to applicable federal guidelines. Borrowers may be required to provide updated income and family size information as required by the program. Payment amounts may change if financial circumstances or program requirements change.

For married borrowers, spouse income may be considered depending on applicable rules, tax filing status, and other program requirements.

Depending on eligibility, qualifying payments, and applicable federal regulations, borrowers may be eligible for forgiveness of any remaining loan balance after completing the required repayment period. Forgiveness availability and requirements are determined by the U.S. Department of Education and applicable loan servicers.

IBR may be considered by some borrowers who have higher loan balances compared to their income or who are exploring repayment options that may work with programs such as Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), provided all applicable eligibility requirements are met.

Borrowers should be aware that repayment plans may result in different total repayment amounts over time. In some situations, borrowers may pay more compared to other repayment options, such as the Standard Repayment Plan. Tax treatment of any forgiven loan balance may vary based on applicable federal and state tax laws.

For specific information regarding your loans, eligibility, and available repayment options, borrowers should consult their loan servicer or official federal student loan resources.
